February 2014

February is American Heart Month

Make sure to celebrate healthy hearts during February.  This month is a great time to have a Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart event.

The American Heart Association has free online resources for teachers (click here for resources).

Great App for Teachers and Coaches
‘CoachNote‘. This app is a super simple coach whiteboard that includes all of the different equipment you might find within your sports storeroom. One of the exciting features of the app is the ability to take a photo that can then be drawn over. This has resulted in me taking a photo of our school gym and utilizing it to create ultra-realistic game setups. Once complete these are then shown to the student cohort at the start of the session, with the instructions being “work as a group to setup the game exactly as shown in the example below”. This seemingly simple task has not only minimized my setup time, but has provided me with countless opportunities to gather insight into how students work together to achieve a common goal.

Searching for Inspirational Young People to Serve as Healthy Living Ambassadors!

Applicants must be between the ages of 8 and 17 years old when membership begins June 2014 and live in the United States. Interested youth can visit www.healthiergeneration.org for more information.

Get Ready for Every Kid Healthy Week!

Schools nationwide have implemented wellness initiatives to promote and reinforce healthy eating, physical activity, nutrition education, and physical education in order to increase student achievement. Action for Healthy Kids will be recognizing Every Kid Healthy Week on April 21-25, 2014. During the observance and throughout the month of April, Action for Health Kids will work with schools in Alabama to host Every Kid Healthy events to make sustainable changes that encourage students to eat better and be active every day.

This is a great time to encourage healthy habits to support peak performance in academic achievement as students who attend schools that integrate student wellness are likely to have higher academic achievement scores.   To support schools interested in celebrating Every Kid Healthy Week, Alabama Action for Healthy Kids, is pleased to offer the “Every Kid Healthy Week Challenge” – a school-wide activity and art project.  If you would like more information about this challenge so your school can take part, please contact Christina Vanzandt at cvanzandt@actionforhealthykids.org.
