<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Technology in Physical Education </span></h2>
<span style="color: red; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i>I asked Dr. Wendy Cowan at Athens State University to be a guest blogger on technology this week. Dr. Cowan is my go-to-person when I need advice on using technology in physical education and a great presenter on the 21st Century Classroom.</i></span><br />
<span style="color: red; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><br /></i></span>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have you ever heard a grandparent, or
someone older, talk about school back in the "good ol' days"? And
heard the tall tale about walking 5 miles to school, barefooted, through the
snow, rain, wind and hail, to a one-room school house in the middle of Nowhereville?
Whether your grandparent has told you this same story or not, I'm sure you've
heard of it being told to children. And while we like to assume that never
happened, for some people, it is probably a fairly accurate account of going to
school many, many years ago. Fortunately, in the United States, that's not
typically the case today.</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Schools are no longer isolated one-room
buildings in the middle of "Nowhereville". Most schools consist of
multi-structure facilities with administrators, counselors, teachers and
support staff. And while the students are still traveling to schools, to sit
inside classrooms designed for teaching and learning, neither the teaching nor
the learning should be confined to the four walls of the classroom! With the
abundance of technology today, a teacher's classroom is only limited by the
limits he/she places upon it. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">We have come a long way since the long,
cold walk to school. Today, a "21st century" classroom has the
potential to reach students, parents, friends, relatives, peers, etc. for
collaboration, teaching and learning 24/7.This is all possible when the </span><span style="font-size: 10.5pt;">Internet is used to expand your classroom
and advocate your program. We will use the umbrella term "eMarketing"
as a descriptor of this process.</span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<h3>
<b style="background-color: transparent;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">What is eMarketing?</span></b></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Very simply put, eMarketing or
electronic marketing refers to the application of marketing principles and
techniques via electronic media and more specifically the Internet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">eMarketing is the process of marketing
a brand using the Internet. It includes both direct response marketing and
indirect marketing elements and uses a range of technologies to help connect
businesses to their customers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By such a definition, eMarketing
encompasses all the activities a business conducts via the worldwide Web with
the aim of attracting new business, retaining current business and developing
its brand identity.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><b>What does this have to do with education?</b></span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Who says we can't or shouldn't apply
successful business strategies to the classroom situation? I'm going to take
the same text from above and change a few words... see if it makes sense to
you.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-left: 15pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">eMarketing is the
process of marketing a brand using the Internet. It includes both direct
response marketing and indirect marketing elements and uses a range of
technologies to help connect s<i>chools and teachers</i> to their <i>students
and parents</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-left: 15pt;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">By such a definition,
eMarketing encompasses all the activities a school or teacher conducts via the
worldwide Web with the aim of <i>communicating with students and parents,
expanding classroom teaching and learning and advocating for the school and
classroom programs</i>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now, doesn't that sound like something
you should be doing, as a 21st century classroom teacher?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"><b>Why is eMarketing important?</b></span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When implemented correctly, the return
on investment from eMarketing can far exceed that of traditional marketing
strategies.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Whether you're a "bricks and
mortar" business (school/classroom) or a concern operating purely online,
the Internet is a force that cannot be ignored. It can be a means to reach
literally millions of people every year. It's at the forefront of a
redefinition of the way businesses (schools/teachers) interact with their
customers (parents/students).<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A good eMarketing plan for your

of the great things that you will want to do.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

direction. This can be done with NO expense and maximum benefits.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

with parents anything from homework notices to school program dates, to

<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Health-E-tips’ JAM School Program and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation have teamed up for the second annual <b>Just-A-Minute (JAM) World Record</b>. On <b><span style="color: red;">Thursday, September 26th </span></b>millions of kids and adults will be participating to set a new record for the most people taking a one-minute fitness break. JAM World Record was created to promote the importance of everyone being active every day and encourage millions of kids and adults to take “just-a-minute” to get up and get moving.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The JAM School Program brings physical activity and health education into the classroom. JAM is designed to teach kids (and adults) healthier lifestyle habits. <b><span style="color: red;">JAM is a free wellness resource for schools</span></b>. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation works to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. The Alliance works with more than 17,000 schools to increase access to healthier foods and physical activity for students and staff.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><i><b>Let's Move!</b></i> is a campaign to end childhood obesity in the United States. The campaign was started by First Lady Michelle Obama. The initiative has the initially stated goal of "solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight. <i>Let's Move!</i> seeks to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity and encourage a healthy lifestyle through "a comprehensive, collaborative, and community-oriented initiative that addresses all of the various factors that lead to childhood obesity engaging every sector of society that impacts the health of children to provide schools, families and communities the simple tools they need to help kids be more active, eat better, and get healthy</span>. </div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alabama Youth Council</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For the past ten years, the ALSDE had supported the <b>FOCUS Program</b>. Approximately 250 high schools throughout the state have implemented a FOCUS course through the Health Educator/peer Helping elective curriculum, implemented FOCUS as an extra-curricular activity, or attended facilitator training and FOCUS statewide events. The program empowers students in the prevention of adolescent risk behaviors identified through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On <b>October 3, 2013</b>, the ALSDE, in collaboration with FOCUS, the Alabama Department of Health, the Truman Pierce Institute-Auburn University of Education, and the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, will sponsor the Tenth Annual Statewide AYC. Youth from across the state of Alabama will gather at the Renaissance Hotel and Spa Montgomery Performing Arts Center (MPAC) to promote healthy behaviors among Alabama teens. This year's conference will feature Rachel's Challenge (www.rachelschallenge.org<a href="http://www.rachelschallenge.org/" target="_blank">www.rachelschallenge.org</a>). Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rachel’s dedication to kindness and compassion toward others left a legacy that spread rapidly through anecdotes and her own private writings. Her death led her family to found Rachel’s Challenge. To date, Rachel’s Challenge has visited thousands of schools and communities and touched more than 19 million students, educators, parents, and others.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A day out of the
regular school schedule could spawn a lifetime’s worth of change for students
and educators, as well as the communities they touch over the course of their
lives. Such is the potential impact of Rachel’s Challenge, the keynote
presentation at the <strong>10th Annual Alabama Youth Council (AYC).
</strong></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The AYC will offer the great opportunity for student leaders in grades 9-12 to
learn about leading prevention of Bullying, Teen Pregnancy, HIV, and other
adolescent risk behaviors in their schools and communities. Schools are encouraged to send student leaders from Grades 9-12 and chaperons (or parents) to attend the AYC. The registration fee is $25.00 per person. Lunch and materials will be provided. On this week's blog I am going to address some common back to school questions.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Class Size</span></h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I have been getting several emails and phone calls about class numbers. Many teachers will see greater numbers today because there are parents who not send their children to school until after Labor Day. The <i>Alabama Administrative Code</i> states that the teacher ratio for physical education is 1,000 contacts per week. <u>This is as far as the Alabama State Department (ALSDE) goes on class size</u>. The ALSDE trusts local school systems to use good judgement on class sizes.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Simple math (<b>not mandated by the ALSDE</b>) will give a an indication of average class size. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1000 contacts per week </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;"><b style="font-size: 14pt;">÷ </b>5 days per week = 200 students per day</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">200 students per day </span><b style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 18px;">÷ </b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;"> by the number of classes per day = an average class size</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">What do you need to do if you classes are too big? </span><br />
<br />
<ol>
<li><span style="line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Approach your principal <b><i>professionally</i></b>. No one wants to hear a whiner or constant complainer!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have your numbers per class in writing with demographics such as adequate equipment per student, lockers for each student, dressing space, adequate facility space. Some people need to see the numbers in print.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Invite your principal to visit your classes so they can observe your numbers.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Have some solutions such as rearranging the schedule, or adding a physical education elective course. (If a class time in elementary is 45 minutes a drop back to 30 minutes in order to make more time in a schedule to add an additional class).</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Be patient</b>. Do not expect miracles overnight. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Keep documentation.</span></li>
</ol>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Your principal may be very sympathetic but may not be able to do anything due to funding. Do your best! Whatever you do, do not throw up your hands in disrepair and not teach! You may want to refer to the <a href="http://www.aahperd.org/naspe/publications/teachingTools/upload/Teaching-Large-Class-Sizes-in-PE-2006.pdf" target="_blank">National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE)</a> for suggestions on teaching large class sizes. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To see the class size chart <a href="http://www.alsde.edu/home/Sections/SectionFAQs.aspx?SectionID=54" target="_blank">click here</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Weather Conditions</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The ALSDE does not have any policies concerning extreme weather conditions (too hot, too cold). These are local system decisions. If your school or school system does not have a policy concerning extreme weather conditions, this would be a good opportunity for teachers to approach school officials to develop a ploicy.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Use common sense when weather conditions are extreme. Don't plug in a movie for your students to watch even if it is a health related movie because it is too hot/cold. Students need to be active. Please consider allowing your students to bring a water bottle or have access to water in the hot months.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Time</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The </span><i style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alabama Administrative Code</i><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> states that kindergarten (K) through Grade 8 must receive 30 minutes of \ physical education</span><b style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> daily </b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">with no exception or substitutions. Schools may choose to have more than 30 minutes but may not go below the required 30 minutes. It recommended that middle school grades receive 50 minutes of physical education to allow for dressing in and out. Daily means daily, not minutes per week. There are no waivers granted for substituting physical education for Grades K-8 unless it is a severe medical condition. In the case of a severe medical condition, only Dr. Bice may grant the waiver. Local school systems, principals, or counselors may not grant a substitution.</span></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE)</b></span></h2>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The LIFE course is the required physical education course for graduation. The ALSDE recommends that this course be taught in Grade 9. This is not a new course. The LIFE course was included in the <i>Alabama Course of Study: Physical Education</i> in 1996 with its on course code (24002). This course has very specific standards that must be taught. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This summer Dr. Sandra Sims (UAB), Tim Mecham (Trussville City Schools) and Navada Spurlock (Hoover City Schools) worked on different methods for teaching the LIFE course. To access that information <a href="https://drive.google.com/?tab=jo&authuser=0#folders/0B1PAElKQOsXoRldKSFo5TURjdXM" target="_blank">click here</a>. </span></div>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">High School Physical Education Electives Explained</span></h2>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The elective code for physical education is
24003. This code may be duplicated as many times as
needed to reflect that a student is enrolled in a physical education elective
course followed by the school system code that has been shredded
out to reflect different elective courses. <o:p></o:p><span style="line-height: 115%;">The 2009 </span><i style="line-height: 115%;">Alabama Course of
Study: Physical Education</i><span style="line-height: 115%;"> states
that elective courses focus on the development and refinement of skills,
knowledge, social and personal traits, and physical fitness acquired in Grades
K-8 and in the high school Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE)
course (code 24002).</span><span style="line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="line-height: 115%;">Physical education

the completion of the required LIFE course.</span></b><span style="line-height: 115%;">
</span><span style="line-height: 115%;">There are no standards for a Grade 9-12 general physical education
course.</span><span style="line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="line-height: 115%;"><b>No course should be entitled
general physical education</b>, athletic physical education, advance LIFE course, or
advanced physical education.</span></span><span style="font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Students who have taken the LIFE course (code
24002) and mastered the content with a passing grade may not be placed in the
same class period with other students who are enrolled in the LIFE course. The <i>Alabama
Administrative Code</i> 290-3-1(d)1 states that a student shall not earn credit
toward graduation for a course that duplicates course content for which credit
has already been awarded. <span style="color: red;"> </span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
